Malicious Cyber Activity Rises Following Natural Disasters
Remain on alert for malicious cyber activity following natural disasters, such as the recent Hurricane Helene. Unfortunately, hackers will target disaster victims and concerned citizens with clever phishing scams. In these scams, they pose as trustworthy persons or disaster-relief charities to solicit personal information via email or malicious websites.
It is recommended that you exercise additional caution in handling emails with disaster-related subject lines, attachments, or hyperlinks. It’s always best to investigate links on social media platforms and text messages related to relief efforts.
The National Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommends the following tips to help keep yourself and those affected safe.
- Be aware of the Federal Trade Commission’s information on Staying Alert to Disaster-related Scams and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s list of Frauds and Scams.
- Do your research before Giving to a Charity.
