As a key part of our Google AI initiatives, we are thrilled to introduce Google Gems, a powerful feature within Google Gemini Apps that allows you to instantly create your own custom, highly-specialized AI assistants.
Think of a Gem as your personal, always-on AI expert, pre-loaded with the context, goals, and rules predefined by you.
Google Gems are custom-configured versions of the Gemini AI chat model, powered by a sophisticated, permanent prompt that dictates the AI’s exact persona, behavior, and output format. This allows you to launch a customized AI partner for virtually any recurring task, from summarizing technical documents to a structured research assistant, ensuring consistent, high-quality responses for every output.
For Google AI Pro users, Gems also support deep context integration, allowing you to upload files like notes or internal style guides to give your AI proprietary, specific knowledge to reference in its responses.

Gems are easily accessible through your WFU Google Gemini Apps interface.
- Navigate to gemini.google.com (Sign in with your WFU Google Workspace account).
- Look for the “Explore Gems” option in the sidebar.
- Choose a pre-made Gem (like the Coding Partner or Writing Editor) or select “New Gem” to begin customizing your own specialist AI.
When creating a new Gem, you’ll be prompted to define its core identity and purpose. This includes entering a concise, unique title (for easy identification) and a detailed description (to explain its functionality to other users). You will also be asked to select relevant categorization tags to make the Gem discoverable in searches.
A major update to the platform now allows you to easily share your custom Gems, transforming your individual AI expert into a powerful team asset. To share, simply navigate to the “Explore Gems” page, click the three-dot menu next to your Gem, and select the Share option to open the permissions dialogue. From there, you can either invite specific WFU colleagues via email or generate a shareable link, mirroring the familiar process of sharing a file in Google Drive.
