October is the perfect month to explore the strange, unexplained and, perhaps, supernatural. For Wake Forest University psychology professor Dr. Melissa Maffeo, those questions are at the center of her new book, Science of the Supernatural: Critical Thinking for the Mind and Brain, published by Cambridge University Press in March 2026.

Maffeo’s book examines experiences commonly described as paranormal—including ghost sightings, sleep paralysis, psychic phenomena, false memories and mystical experiences—through the lenses of psychology and neuroscience. Rather than simply asking whether the supernatural is real, Maffeo explores how the brain shapes our perceptions and interpretations of unusual experiences.

Her work has recently reached an even wider audience. In September, Maffeo appeared on WBUR’s On Point to discuss the science behind paranormal experiences, including why people may interpret experiences such as sleep paralysis as supernatural.

To support her digital storytelling and podcasting work, Maffeo used the Studio: A Space for Digital Innovation in ZSR Library. The Studio’s podcasting equipment, including the RØDECaster Duo, gave her access to professional-quality audio recording technology in an accessible campus space.

The project is a great example of how the Studio supports faculty beyond the classroom—providing technology, space and consultation for research, creative projects and public-facing scholarship. The Studio, sponsored by Information Systems, works with faculty, staff and students across disciplines to explore digital tools and create meaningful digital projects.

This October, as conversations about ghosts and the paranormal take center stage, Maffeo’s work offers a different way to look at the unexplained: with curiosity, skepticism and a better understanding of how our brains make sense of the world around us.
