Information Security at WFU, With You “Through the Eras”

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a nationwide campaign that provides an opportunity to increase the focus on understanding Internet security and to raise awareness of the resources available to stay safe online.

The Information Systems Cybersecurity team has been with WFU “through the eras.” Each week this month, follow along as we introduce Swiftie approved solutions for phishing scams, and hackers, revealing the tools available to empower YOU in protecting yourself and your data.

ALWAYS forward suspicious texts, emails, or phone calls to infosec@wfu.edu for verification!

How to Spot a
Spoofed Email Address

October 7th – 11th

Take Action!

  • Check the “From” and “Reply-To” field in an email to inspect for suspicious email addresses.
  • Verify: Ensure that emails claiming to be from WFU or its students, faculty, or staff come from official WFU email addresses.

I get new emails every day, day, day, day, day,
But this from and reply-to look so strange, strange, strange, strange, strange,
So I’m gonna need to verify-fy-fy-fy-fy,
Verify emails, verify emails

How to Check for
Suspicious Links in an Email

October 14th – 18th

Take Action!

  • Don’t click on a suspicious link, especially when you do not know the person.
  • Hover your mouse over the link, before clicking on a link, and a text box should pop up with the complete link address. If the link is directing you to a suspicious or unknown website, don’t click on the link!

“This email’s new,
Links in the body are blue,
Suspicious feeling I’ve got are like
oooh, woah ohhh
It’s from a cruel sender”

How to Report Phishing Emails

October 21st – 25th

Take Action!

  • Report Suspicious Emails: If you receive any suspicious emails, report them to our Information Security team immediately.
  • Forward the suspicious email to infosec@wfu.edu.

If you can see the sketchy email that was sent to you,
It just came along, so I hope you go read,
The Incident response policy,

I Fell for a Phishing Scam,
Now What?

October 28th – November 1st

Take Action!

  • Contact the Information Systems Security Team at infosec@wfu.edu
  • Enable a security checklist from Google: This acts on the Google Account that you are signed into and allows you to see personalized recommendations from Google to make your account more secure in the future.

“I clicked a link now it’s over,
My account went up in flames,
I wished I realized it was a scam sooner, mmm,

InfoSec is here to save the day!”
