Denice Lewis is a STEM Librarian at the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, extensively experimenting with AI tools since 2021. She leverages a diverse suite of large language models, visual mapping tools, and AI software to aid in academic ideation, STEM research strategies, and productivity. Lewis emphasizes the critical necessity of teaching students to select the appropriate AI tool for specific tasks, ensuring they understand the structural differences between simple web-scraping chatbots, library discovery interfaces, databases, and AI research tools. She ultimately views AI as a digital utility, focusing her instruction on building students’ competencies to use these systems responsibly and ethically in their future careers.
