Class of 2017 – August Graduates

As you prepare for graduation, we would like to provide you with computing information important for all Wake Forest graduates.  This page will guide you through those tasks.  If you have questions concerning any of this information, please contact the Information Systems Service Desk by calling 336-758-4357 (HELP). Best wishes for success as you join the ranks of Wake Forest alumni!

Step 1

WFU Alumni Accounts

The Office of Alumni Engagement offers Alumni Gmail accounts to graduating students. This is a great opportunity for you to maintain a Wake Forest email address after graduation. Your WFU Alumni Gmail account will be an email account with access to Google Drive and all of Gmail’s standard functions. This means you have the opportunity to transfer your existing @wfu.edu content (messages, files, contacts) to your new @alumni.wfu.edu account before your @wfu.edu account is deleted 60 days after your graduation. You will also be able to access your 1098-T tax form online through your WFU Alumni Gmail account.

WFU Google Account Transfer

Your student account will be disabled 60 days after graduation. If you would like to access any of your messages, contacts, and files that you have accumulated during your time as a student, you must transfer that content prior to the deletion of your student account. If you would like to have a WFU Alumni Gmail account created for you, you will need to apply for a WakeNetwork account:  https://wakenetwork.wfu.edu/.  Make sure you select Yes on the Create Gmail Account option on the application form.

Step 2

Ensure that you have a current backup of your data on an external hard drive or USB flash drive. Visit this helpful web page about creating a backup of your important files. If you need help with backing up your data, please contact the Information Systems Service Desk at 336-758-4357 or help@wfu.edu.

Your data will no longer be available if you return the ThinkPad. Ensure your data is backed up.

Step 3

Do you have an X1 Carbon or Yoga ThinkPad?

To purchase the X1 ThinkPad or Yoga for $300 plus sales tax $20.25 ($320.25), go to the secure online web site to make your credit card payment. You must complete the purchase no later than August 15, 2017.

Purchase ThinkPad

Ownership of the ThinkPad, together with the support and maintenance responsibilities, will transfer to you upon graduation on August 15, 2017.

Lenovo warranty support, which varies by ThinkPad model, is provided by Lenovo for a limited time only. To see if the ThinkPad is still under warranty and/or covered by ThinkPad Protection, visit this Lenovo web site.

Download the software needed to keep your ThinkPad functional after graduation

Due to software licensing restrictions no software originally provided on the ThinkPad standard load will transfer to you. You must obtain legally licensed software for the ThinkPad. Failure to do so may result in the loss of functionality of the operating system and software, and the loss of your data after graduation.

Before you begin

For the X1 CARBON and Yoga,  you will need:

  1. external hard drive or USB flash drive for data backup
  2. access to a printer or a second computer in order to view required instructions-helpful tip but not required!

Download and install legally licensed software

Follow the instructions here to download Windows 10. It may be helpful to print the instructions or view them on another computer before starting the download.

Failure to complete this process no later than August 15, 2017, may result in the loss of functionality of the operating system and software, as well as the loss of your data.

If this occurs you will have to contact Lenovo at 1-800-426-7378 directly to obtain a copy of the legally licensed software for the ThinkPad. (You will need to press 1 for Lenovo and then press 1 several times to reach Tech Support.)

Return the ThinkPad to Wake Forest in person or by mail before August 15, 2017.

If you would like to return the ThinkPad while you are still on campus, you will need to take the ThinkPad and power adapter to the Information Systems Service Desk no later than August 15, 2017. Check here for hours of operation. A member of the Service Desk team will assist you with the return of the ThinkPad. A receipt will be provided to you.

If you cannot take the ThinkPad to the Information Systems Service Desk in person, you must use UPS or FedEx to ship it before August 15, 2017, insured for at least $325 for the X1 Carbon and Yoga to the following address. Don’t use the US Postal Service. The US Postal Service will not deliver to the address below.

WFU-Information Systems

Attn: Asset Management

1100 Reynolds Blvd.

Failure to return the ThinkPad will result in a charge on your account and a hold that will prohibit the release of your transcript.

Check out the WakeWare program if you are in need of a new laptop – Apple and Dell models are available at a University discount.

Step 4

Follow these steps, in this order:

To get your copy of Microsoft Office 2016, and other Microsoft applications, you must sign in at wfu.onthehub.com using your WFU Google Account.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to record the software product key by writing it down in a safe place or emailing it to your personal email. The software product key serves as proof of your right to run the software.

Software for personal use can be purchased at wfu.onthehub.com. Examples include Microsoft and Apple operating systems, virtualization software, Corel products, and more.
Note: When prompted during the software download process, choose the 32-bit version (rather than the 64-bit version) of Microsoft Office.

Protect yourself by purchasing licensed antivirus software such as Symantec AntiVirus or McAfee VirusScan.

Note: Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus software is licensed to Wake Forest, therefore it had to be removed during the reload process. You may also download a free copy of Microsoft Security Essentials.
