Good news! On Saturday, June 27, 2020, Information Systems will enable Google Chat as the default chat application, replacing Google Hangouts and eliminating the confusion associated with having both applications.
Google Chat makes it even easier to collaborate with your colleagues, from direct messages to group conversations, virtual “rooms” for team collaboration with conversation threads for separating topic discussions, emoji reactions, and bot integrations to increase productivity.
No action is generally required on your part to use Google Chat, however, if you have the Google Hangouts extension or application on your computer or mobile device, you will need to delete it and install the Google Chat extension at chat.google.com or application for Android or iOS.
The first time you access your Gmail after the update, you will see several introductory screens about Google Chat. You may click through the screens to review the content or simply close the screens.
